Area = length × width. Square yards = square feet ÷ 9. Acres = square feet ÷ 43,560. Hectares = square metres ÷ 10,000.

Built by the TradeProStack Research Desk. Free to use. No signup required. Area = length × width; square yards = sq ft ÷ 9. Odd shapes: measure as separate rectangles and add.

How to read your result

Example (illustrative)

A room 20 ft long and 15 ft wide:

  1. Area: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
  2. Square yards: 300 ÷ 9 = 33.33 sq yd

Which trades is this for?

Trades that measure and price work by area.

  • Flooring: the basic measurement for estimating materials.
  • Painting: wall and ceiling area for coverage calculations.
  • Turf & landscaping: lawns, beds and sod.
  • Cleaning: commercial quotes priced per square foot.
  • Concrete: slab area before calculating thickness.

Assumptions & limits

  • Rectangles only. For L-shapes, triangles and curves, break the area into rectangles (and right triangles at half area), then add the measurements together.
  • Measure the finished dimensions — wall to wall for flooring, rather than the rough opening.
  • Waste isn’t included. Flooring, tile and turf need 5–15% extra for cuts and pattern matching. Add that separately when ordering materials.
  • Results are rounded to two decimals. That’s fine for estimating, but boundary work still needs a surveyor.

Common questions

How do I measure an odd-shaped room?

Break it into rectangles (and any right triangles, using half their length × width), measure each section and add the areas together. Sketch the room on paper first so you don’t miss any corners.

Why do pros order 10% more material than the area?

Cuts, pattern matching, damaged boards and end-of-roll waste all use extra material. A room measuring exactly 300 sq ft can still need 320–345 sq ft of flooring once you account for cutting. The calculator gives you the net area, so add waste before ordering.

Square feet vs square yards — which do I need?

Flooring, carpet and turf are usually priced by the square yard (9 sq ft), while paint, drywall and concrete are priced by the square foot. The calculator shows both so you can use whichever unit your supplier quotes.

How do I measure for paint vs flooring?

For flooring, multiply the floor’s length × width. For paint, measure each wall’s height × width, add the areas together and subtract large windows and doors. The calculation is the same, but you’re measuring different surfaces.
