This geofenced time tracking comparison is for owners with 3 to 10 field staff who are tired of timesheet arguments on payroll day — here is how Connecteam, Hubstaff, and Homebase actually differ on price, GPS, and limits.

The short version
A geofence is a virtual boundary you draw around a job site. With it switched on, the clock only runs where the work happens: clock-ins from outside the fence get blocked, clock-outs can fire automatically when someone leaves, and every punch carries a GPS stamp. It ends buddy punching and sofa clock-ins without you playing detective on Friday afternoon.
Three tools do it three different ways. Connecteam (from $29/month) bakes geofencing into its time clock with automatic clock-out on exit and per-job geofences. Hubstaff (Team at $10 per seat per month plus a $3.33 per seat geofencing add-on, annual billing) is the most automatic: the timer can start and stop itself at the fence. Homebase ($30 per location per month on Essentials) blocks off-site punches and backs them with PIN and photo checks. The right one depends on whether you want all-in-one team management, pure time tracking, or the cheapest path for a single location.
At a glance
- Reader: owners with 3 to 10 field staff who argue about timesheets on payroll day.
- Pricing basis: USD, checked October 21, 2026. Geofencing features sit on paid tiers; the “free” framing on some of these tools does not include them.
- Key limitation: no tool verifies that someone who clocked in inside the fence actually worked. Geofencing fixes location fraud, not supervision.
- How we researched: vendor documentation and pricing pages, read October 20-21, 2026. We did not test these products hands-on.
What is a geofence, and what does it actually stop?
A geofence is a boundary drawn on a map around a job site or your shop. The time clock app checks the phone’s location against that boundary at clock-in and clock-out. Homebase, for example, lets you set the radius at 150 feet, one block, or five blocks around the business address or a remote job site, with one geofence per location.
What it stops is specific. First, clocking in from the sofa: attempts outside the fence are blocked. Homebase blocks the punch and sends the admin an alert; Connecteam’s own FAQ frames it as ensuring employees clock in only from the job site. Second, forgotten clock-outs: Connecteam clocks users out automatically when they leave the geofence, and Hubstaff can stop the timer on exit. Third, buddy punching, where one employee clocks in for another: Homebase pairs GPS validation of every clock-in and clock-out with PINs and photo capture, and Connecteam’s stated goal for the feature is to “eliminate absences, time theft, and buddy punching.”
What it does not stop: a tech clocking in inside the fence and then leaving the phone in the truck. Location proves presence at punch time, not effort through the day. That last gap is supervision, and no app closes it.

How the three options compare
Connecteam: geofencing inside an all-in-one team app
Connecteam lets admins create a virtual boundary around a job site and require it per job type. Employees can only clock in once physically inside it; clocking out outside the fence can require manager approval, or the system can clock them out automatically on exit. Its “Breadcrumbs” feature maps employee movement while clocked in, updating every 5 to 10 minutes after movement as a battery-saving measure. Location tracking runs only during active shifts and stops at clock-out. A GPS location stamp is captured at every clock-in and clock-out, including mid-shift job switches, and GPS can be set to optional, required, or off.
Two honest notes from the vendor’s own pages. First, automatic clock-out on exit is confirmed, but automatic clock-in on entry is not: the page describes clock-in as a manual employee tap that is only allowed inside the fence. Do not expect the clock to start itself when someone arrives. Second, the pages say tracking begins at clock-in and stops at clock-out, with iOS and Android apps implied by the app-store badges, but they do not state a location-services permission requirement. Your crew’s phones still need location turned on for any of this to work, so confirm that in setup rather than assuming it.
Pricing: a free-for-life plan exists; paid plans start at $29/month for the first 30 users on Basic (GPS time clock plus payroll-ready timesheets), $49/month on Advanced (auto clock-out, up to 10 geofences), and $99/month on Expert (GPS breadcrumbs, unlimited geofences).

Hubstaff: the most automatic option, at a per-seat price
Hubstaff puts GPS-based geofences on mobile and lets entering or leaving a job-site radius automatically start or stop the timer. Multiple job-site geofences are supported, and the automatic action on arrival is configurable: start the timer, send a reminder, or do nothing. Its own page frames auto geofence clock-in and out as “fewer missed punches, no buddy punching,” with a live map for managers and fleet-tracking modes (always on, while tracking, during shift, or off).
There is also a genuine control for the strict shop: enable “restrict time tracking to Job Sites” and users cannot start the timer unless they are inside the job-site radius. Outside the fence with that setting off, tracking is allowed; the vendor pages describe blocking, not flagging, so do not expect a “suspicious punch” warning queue. Battery impact is stated as about 2 percent of a healthy battery per hour, with up to 500-meter accuracy. Job sites are created on the web dashboard; the apps cover iOS, Android, tablet, Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Pricing is where you need the calculator. The Team plan is $10 per seat per month on annual billing ($12 monthly), and geofencing comes through the Locations add-on at $3.33 per seat per month annual ($4 monthly) on Team, included on Enterprise, and not available on Starter or Grow. For a 6-person crew on annual billing, that is roughly $80/month all-in for geofenced time tracking. If per-seat math makes you wince, our technician utilization calculator can show what unbillable hours are already costing you.
Homebase: the cheapest path, with snapshot GPS
Homebase’s pitch is “stop buddy punching” via PINs and photo capture to verify the user, plus GPS validation of every clock-in and clock-out. The geofence radius options are 150 feet, one block, or five blocks around the business address or a remote job site, with one geofence per location. Attempts to clock in or out outside the fence are blocked, and the admin gets an alert.
The important technical distinction: Homebase’s GPS is snapshot-only. It captures location at each clock-in and clock-out (and breaks); it does “not continuously track your employee’s location during their shift.” If you want a live trail of where the truck went, this is not it. The snapshots live under Timesheets, on the time card’s “Photo and GPS validation” view.
The pricing caveat matters more here than with the other two. Homebase markets itself as a free time clock app, but the GPS snapshots, geofencing, and the mobile time clock itself require the Essentials plan or higher. Essentials is $30 per location per month with unlimited employees (Plus is $70, All-in-One $120). For a single-location shop, that is the cheapest geofenced option of the three, as long as one geofence per location and snapshot GPS are enough.
What does it cost, side by side?
| Connecteam | Hubstaff | Homebase | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheapest plan with geofencing | $29/mo, Basic (first 30 users) | Team $10/seat/mo annual + Locations add-on $3.33/seat/mo annual | Essentials $30/location/mo (unlimited employees) |
| Free tier | Free-for-life plan exists (confirm geofencing is included before relying on it) | No free tier with geofencing (add-on needs Team or higher) | Basic free (no geofencing) |
| Top tier | Expert $99/mo (breadcrumbs, unlimited geofences) | Enterprise (add-on included; price on request) | All-in-One $120/mo |
| GPS style | Live breadcrumbs every 5-10 min while clocked in | Live map while tracking | Snapshot-only at clock-in/out and breaks |
The honest limits, all in one place
- Connecteam: no verified automatic clock-in on entry (clock-in is a manual tap inside the fence); the location-services permission requirement is not stated on the vendor pages, so confirm it during setup.
- Hubstaff: geofencing is a paid add-on on paid plans, and the per-seat cost stacks with crew size. Blocking outside the fence requires the restrict setting; there is no vendor-described flagging queue for suspicious punches.
- Homebase: one geofence per location, snapshot GPS only, and the “free” framing does not include geofencing.
- All three: none of them confirm that hours inside the fence were hours worked. The fence fixes location fraud. Everything else is still management.

What to tell the crew before you switch it on
How you introduce this matters more than which app you pick. Frame it as payroll accuracy, not surveillance: the fence exists so nobody’s hours get questioned and nobody has to argue on Friday. Show the crew the fence radius on a map, and show them the vendor’s own tracking limits: Connecteam’s tracking begins at clock-in and stops at clock-out; Hubstaff’s fleet modes include a during-shift-only option. Nobody is being followed home.
Two practical steps before day one: confirm every crew phone has location services enabled and the app installed, and run one week where the old timesheet and the geofenced clock run side by side so discrepancies get discussed, not punished. If you want the full playbook on rolling this out without a mutiny, that is coming in a follow-up piece.
Which one fits your shop?
- Want scheduling, team chat, and the time clock in one app? Connecteam. The geofence is one feature inside a broader team-management system, and the per-job geofence requirement fits shops that bounce crews between sites.
- Want the most automatic option, where the timer starts and stops itself at the fence? Hubstaff. You pay per seat for it, so it fits crews where missed punches, not hourly cost, are the bigger leak.
- Want the cheapest path for one location with simple needs? Homebase Essentials at $30/month with unlimited employees. One geofence per location and snapshot GPS are the trade-offs.
If the deeper problem is that too few of those tracked hours are billable in the first place, run the numbers in our technician utilization calculator before you buy anything. And the full free tools hub has the rest of the crew-math toolkit.
